It has been a device monitoring constantly the exchange signal of the Cray CPUs. If the system crashed no more exchange takes place, a timer counts down and when it reaches zero it dials a prerecorded phone number and leaves a prerecorded voice message that the system appears to be down. Also had smoke detectors and humidity checking. Got used for acceptance times. Developed and constructed by Munich based German Cray engineer Robert Babl

Shipment has been made to the University of Kiel, West Germany, of CRAY X-MP
system Serial 318. This is our tenth customer and eleventh supercomputer
in operation in that country. The system will be used for basic research,
particularly in the areas of astrophysics and oceanographics. Kiel is in
northern West Germany, in the state of Schleswig-Holstein, near the Kieler
Bucht and Denmark.

A REINSTALLATION IN EUROPE
Serial 318 CRAY X-MP, which was formerly owned by the University of Kiel in
West Germany, has been delivered to a new European customer ( Prakia in Norway). Serial 318
was superseded at the University by a larger CRAY X-MP system, Serial 416.
Site later upgraded in 1996 to Cray J932 – 20 CPUs with 4096 Mbytes memory just squeezing onto the top 500 list.
