It has been a device monitoring constantly the exchange signal of the Cray CPUs. If the system crashed no more exchange takes place, a timer counts down and when it reaches zero it dials a prerecorded phone number and leaves a prerecorded voice message that the system appears to be down. Also had smoke detectors and humidity checking. Got used for acceptance times. Developed and constructed by Munich based German Cray engineer Robert Babl
