Toby Harness reports – I released detailed YMP and Cray-2 3D model plans on Thingiverse.com
The YMP can run a full emulator, booting UNICOS (by Modular Circuits/The Cray Files).
The Cray 2 doesn’t have an emulator, but does have a floodable tank option, with an air or water pump for bubbles (this option is still being refined, changing an aquarium air pump to a CPU water cooler.)
YMP
A 1:20 scale model of the Cray YMP that set the world speed record in 1988. SN1002, “Reynolds”, at NASA Ames Research Center, NAS Systems Division.Sized to fit a Raspberry Pi 5, which can run a YMP emulator. The YMP cost tens of millions of dollars in 1988, but today a pi 5 8GB will set you back about $80, is 10x faster with 8x the RAM, and will fit on your desk. Moore’s Law in action.
The top vents on the CPU cabinet are a deviation, but necessary for cooling the raspberry pi (the YMP was liquid cooled). If you don’t plan to install a pi then printing the version without the top vents would be more accurate.
Printing should be straight forward, if time consuming. If you don’t have a multi-color printer, assembly will take some time, patience, and skill. Software configuration of the pi can also be an interesting exercise if you want to install the emulator running UNICOS (Cray’s Unix variant). More information here :

Cray-2
A Cray 2 at 1:10 scale. An iconic supercomputer, first released in 1985. The Cray 2 went in a different direction than the Cray 1/XMP/YMP lines, both with the CPU architecture and physical design. Unusually compact for the time (45″ tall and 53″ wide), the processors and memory cards were stacked and immersed in a liquid coolant. While featured in a few movies, only about 30 were sold, and few people were able to see one in person.
A common nickname for Cray-2s was “bubbles”, since the liquid coolant was aerated.
In NASA blue, to complement my YMPi model; print at 50% scale to match the 1:20 scale of the YMPi. Also see the customizable raised computer floor to complete your data center.
No waterfall coolant tank just yet.
Several variants of the model are available for your printing pleasure.
Note: The flooded tank version is still being tweaked. You may be best off waiting on this for a later update. More information here :
